Botox versus Fillers

It’s important to remember that there are different kinds of injections, so you shouldn’t mentally bunch them together.

When it comes to cosmetic treatments, you have a lot of options — and one of the most popular of those options is cosmetic injections. However, it’s important to remember that there are different kinds of injections, so you shouldn’t mentally bunch them together.

Injections can be separated into two categories — Botox and fillers — each of which treats problem areas differently.

What They Are and How They Work

Botox

Botox is a pure form of the botulinum toxin which is taken from a type of bacteria. These injections temporarily freeze your muscles to reduce the signs of aging* and must be injected directly into your muscles in order to work.

Fillers

Contrary to Botox, fillers can be made of a number of different substances including hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxylapatite. While each substance works to correct different issues, overall, fillers work to restore and/or increase the volume of your facial features.*

What They Correct

Botox

In terms of correcting the signs of aging, Botox can decrease wrinkles that are often created by muscle movements.* The FDA allows Botox to treat crow’s feet, “11” lines between your eyebrows, and frown lines.

Fillers

Facial fillers can be used to improve a number of different facial features. If aging has caused you to experience facial volume loss, these treatments can fill in your cheeks, under your eyes, static wrinkles, and fine lines.* Fillers can also improve the fullness of your lips and cheeks.*

Products

Botox

There are two main product lines that include botulinum toxin: Botox Cosmetic and Dysport.

Fillers

Since there are many different substances and formulas in the filler world, there are many different product lines, including:

How Long They Last

Botox

These injections usually last about three to four months, with touchups afterward recommended.*

Fillers

How long these treatments last depends on the particular product. While products that add fullness to your lips can last about four to six months, those that treat other facial features can last anywhere from one to two years.*
