Brown Spots

Brown spots, also known as sun spots or pigmented lesions, are tan to dark brown, freckle-like marks that are caused by excessive sun exposure.

What are brown spots?

Brown spots, also known as sun spots or pigmented lesions, are tan to dark brown, freckle-like marks that are caused by excessive sun exposure. They commonly appear on the face, chest, shoulders and arms because those areas of the body get the most sunlight. Ultraviolet (UV) rays accelerate the production of melanin, which gives skin its brown pigmentation. Brown spots result from overactive pigment cells and melanin being grouped together in higher concentrations.

Why do freckles form?

Like sun spots, freckles also appear on the skin as a result of sun exposure. They may vary in color but are primarily darker than the surrounding skin and are uniform in color. They are a genetic trait, meaning you likely inherited them from your parents.

Freckles tend to appear on the face, but can also occur in places that receive a lot of direct sunlight, like the shoulders and arms. They are produced, or may become more pronounced, when UV rays trigger the body to create more melanin to protect the skin. They are harmless and are not considered a medical condition, but if you are unhappy about the appearance of your freckles, we provide treatments to help reduce them.

What is melasma?

Melasma is a common skin condition in which tan brown patches develop on the face. Melasma most often forms on the forehead, upper cheeks, and upper lip area, which can get a lot of sun exposure. It can also result from hormonal changes, such as pregnancy or from birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy. Sun will worsen melasma, no matter what the original cause.
